Week of March 23rd...

We are still waiting for further clarification and direction from the state about what “continuity of learning” means and should look like. In the meantime, here are some more resources to keep our kiddos educationally engaged during these days away from school.

Please know that these activities will NOT be graded (or counted as Extra Credit).  There is no teacher expectation for students to utilize these resources.

The lessons will cover Geometry:
8. Volume of Rectangular Prisms
9. Volume of Triangular Prisms
10. Volume of Pyramids
11. Volume of Cylinders
12. Volume of Cones
13. Volume of Spheres
I understand that not all students have access to technology and this won’t be a perfect fit for each of you. While I wish that we could meet everyone's specific need, I am hopeful that we can help some.

Stay happy and stay healthy!

Miss Corinchock

Week of March 16th... We are in this together...

Dear Students and Families,
This has been quite the week.  I am sure some of you are feeling anxious and overwhelmed. I want to reassure you that we are in this together.
The past few days I considered how I can support you in your remote learning environment. I tried to think about what I could provide that would not only meet your needs, but be helpful to students learning at home and practical for this situation.
I came across some Remote Learning Lessons covering Equations and Inequalities. These will include short videos.
Please know that these activities will NOT be graded (or counted as Extra Credit).  There is no teacher expectation for students to utilize these resources.
The lessons will cover:
I understand that not all students have access to technology and this won’t be a perfect fit for each of you. While I wish that we could meet everyone's specific need, I am hopeful that we can help some.
I consider it a great privilege to support you and your students.
All the best,
Miss Corinchock

Week of March 9th...

Students will have their Chapter 7 Mid-Chapter Check on Thursday, March 12th.   Please review solving equations mentally (Lesson 1), writing and solving addition equations (Lesson 2), and writing and solving subtraction equations (Lesson 3).

February 24, 2020

Week of February 24th..

This week we will be beginning Chapter 7 Equations.  In this chapter, your child will be learning how to write and solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations.  They will then use those skills to solve two-step equations.  Please review the key vocabulary words and activities that will be sent home on the "Family Letter" this week.

Extra Credit...

Congratulations on wanting to improve your grade. Choose one or more of the math parts on the "Power Up! Performance Task: Cross Country Tryouts."   Assignments must be submitted by the end of the day on Wednesday, February 26th for Period 1, February 27th for Period 2, and February 28th for Period 3.   Answers must be written on another piece of paper and all work must be shown to receive full credit.

February 19, 2020

Week of February 18th..

On Friday, February 21st, the students will have their Chapter 6 tests on vocabulary and Expressions.  All vocabulary words are located throughout Chapter 6 in your child's Math book.  Your child also created a glossary to use as a quick reference as well.  The students will be assessed on writing and evaluating mathematical expressions and will need to apply some properties of mathematics.

Please keep in mind, tests make up 45% of your child's marking period average.

Week of February 10th...

We are nearing the end of Chapter 6. The students will be using properties to simplify expressions.

Like Terms
"Like terms" are terms whose variables are the same.
In other words, terms that are "like" each other.

Note: the coefficients (the numbers you multiply by, such as "5" in 5x) can be different.

Example:

7x    x     -2x
Are all like terms because the variables are all x

Example:

−2xy26xy2xy2/2
Are all like terms because the variables are all xy2

Unlike Terms

If they are not like terms, they are called "Unlike Terms":

Example: These are all Unlike Terms because the variables and/or their exponents are different:

2x2x22y2xy

Combining Like Terms

You can add like terms together to make one term:

Example: 7x + x

They are both like terms, so you can just add them:
7x + x = 8x

By the way ... why don't we write "1x" ?

It is just easier to write x. Imagine adding eggs:
7 eggs plus 1 egg is 8 eggs
is written 7 eggs + egg = 8 eggs

Example: 4x3 + 3x2 − 7 − x2 + 2

Some of the terms are like terms.
Combine like terms:
(4x3) + (3x2 − x2) + (2 − 7)
Then add like terms:
4x3  + 2x2 − 5

Period 3- Distributive Property Quiz on Friday, February 7th.

January 30, 2020

We are beginning to use the Distributive Property to compute multiplication problems mentally and to rewrite algebraic expressions.

Tomorrow, Friday January 31st, 6th grade will be holding a game day in the afternoon for their PBIS reward.  Each student participating is being asked to bring in a family-friendly board game or card game.  No electronics!

Also, tomorrow is our homeroom's team day for only the students who had perfect attendance in the 2nd marking period.  They are able to wear their favorite team shirt with sweats or jeans for free.
